First Try at Making Lace is a Winner

When niece Edana came to visit this summer I took her to the Northern Lights Lace Makers meeting. I thought Edana would like this so much that the dates for her visit were chosen around being able to go to the NLLM meeting.

The ladies there welcomed Edana, showed her their projects, explained what they were doing and even let her try lace making.

Ewa's project
Jocelyn prepared a beginner lace making kit and gave a one on one lesson. Thank you Jocelyn!
Edana's first lace project in progress
I was amazed that Edana learned the basics so quickly. Lace making is something I haven’t even tried yet (do I really have time to take on even more projects?) and I was impressed how quickly Edana caught on.

Edana went home with some bobbins, thread and the pattern for the earrings. She put it all together and entered it in her community’s fall fair. She won!

I wonder is lovely fishy lace earrings are going to make up a big part of her Christmas gift giving plan this year. If they are, I sure hope she sends a pair to me!

I’ve Never Really Taught Anyone How to Tat But…..

I’ve never actually taught anyone how to tat but those days are over – almost.  I can no longer say I’ve never taught anyone how to tat because I did teach my niece the beginning steps to tatting when she came to visit me this summer.  I suppose now I have to say “I’ve never finished teaching someone how to tat.”

We went on the Paddle Wheel River Boat Tour and brought along tatting supplies just in case we felt we had time to play with thread.  We did.  It was wonderful tatting while floating along the river enjoying the lovely weather, the water, the boat – the day.
First 3 knots!
After a few persistent attempts my Edana (13) made her first few tatted knots.  What a proud aunt I am!

Not long after that her first tatted ring was completed.
First tatted ring!
I showed her how to make picots but we didn't get as far as learning how to make them consistent or how to join them, or how to make chains – I guess that will all have to wait for the next visit.

When you teach people how to tat – what tips do you give?  Do you have favourite resources you share with new tatters?

Alpina and I are going on an adventure in September!

My bike, Alpina and I are going on an adventure in September!

I am celebrating my 5 year cancer-free announcement by doing a happy dance, cutting off over a foot of hair, and riding my bike 150 kilometers through Riding Mountain National Park!

Alpina and I have been travelling all over Winnipeg for the last couple of summers.  Now we’re ready to go far beyond the bike trails around Transcona, and go all the way from Dauphin to Clear Lake and back.

I invite you to show your support towards my fund-raising goal for the MS Bike tour
Not only will you be supporting The MS Society, but you will be helping me celebrate my own health and happiness.

The next 2 people to donate $50 or more on-line will receive a pair of hand knit socks as a special thank you.

My messy starching job left lots of residue.  I tried to scrape it off but it didn't work.
Any suggestions how to fix?

I'm fulfilling a personal challenge to bike 150 KM from Dauphin to Clear Lake and back to Dauphin over two days.

This is a super fast and easy design.  Makes a cute tatting sample, or maybe even a nice earring design, especially with sparkly thread.

Trek to Machu Picchu

My friend Laurie participated in the Charity Challenge Trek to Machu Picchu. I so much wanted to go with her but sadly, I didn't fit in her back pack.

However; something that represents me did and Laurie kindly took my tatting shuttle with her.
My tatting shuttle prepared for a great adventure

I asked Laurie to take a picture or two of my shuttle at Machu Picchu and she brought back great stories, my shuttle and wonderful photos.  Look at the tatting shuttle pictures she gave me!

Thank you Laurie!

A Note from Niece Meghan

In December I gave my nieces each an embroidered pillow case for Christmas (See Crochet Skirt Lady in Yellow and Crochet Skirt Lady in Orange).

Recently I received a letter from niece Meghan.
"Your pillow cases have given me great drawing ideas."
Artwork by Meghan
It’s such a nice feeling when someone tells you that you inspired them and even better when it’s your niece.

Today is Miss Meghan’s birthday.  Please help me wish her a happy day.
